Quick note entry

Hey Drew! What you’re saying is true, yes, and one can also make a shortcut for that quick access too.
Upnote has a few good ideas concerning a widget - they have buttons for quick access to make a to-do list, take a photo, start a sketch, scan a document etc., and pressing on it creates a new note (depends on one’s preference, either having a dump all-in-one note or a new note for each input, both approaches can lead to clutter if unattended for long :D)

Is that actually a widget, or some sort of window?

If it is a widget, I assume it just works like a series of buttons, correct? Ie if you tap “Create new note…”, you don’t immediately start editing in-place, but the app opens with a new note. Same with the other buttons, I assume.

It is certainly an interesting piece of UI. It makes you think you will edit right there, and looks familiar, but I assume that is just a fancy way to present some buttons. Am I right?

Yes, you are correct - it is a widget, and each area / icon will open the corresponding action for quick entry.

Drafts has a similar (but not as attractive) widget that has user-configurable buttons to allow for quick capture and many other views / actions:

It’s simple and productive. Everything in one place and everyone can configure it freely and easily. I like that.

I would like to have the configuration with:

  • Template selection
  • smart overview
  • Selection of projects
  • on the agenda
  • yesterday/today/tomorrow
  • To do
  • search

When will this be implemented in Agenda?:+1:t3:

Yeah, this looks amazing, first time I’m seeing it, never used drafts before.

Although wouldn’t that be cool to be a window instead of a widget that just opens the app?

That’s the dream, but we are at the mercy of Apple to allow that to happen…

Any movement here?

Alas, something we still would like to do but not yet at the top of the list.

This is my workflow for quick notes, that can comes handy when I just need to write something down quickly without having to find an appropriate category.
I made a shortcut, that creates a new note, that’s added to a category I created called “Quick notes”, and then opens the newly created note in a separate window and puts it on top of all apps. The note by default gets the current date and time as titled, and tagged with “#Unsorted” . In my workflow I have a pinned overview that lists all notes tagged with “#Unsorted”, so that I can sort them later on.

Thanks to Alfred I can trigger it with a simple keyboard shortcut, “control+q”.

It sounds really great!

I tried to build something like that, but the new note never opens (I must be missing something…).

Could you share your Shortcut? Thanks!

I sure can, but I can’t upload it here because shortcut files and/or zip files aren’t allowed to be uploaded. However, I’ll attach a screenshot of it. Just let me know if that won’t work, and I might be able to email you the shortcut. It’s not the cleanest solution, but it’s still a solution

It works even better in combination of Alfred + Shortcut, because if you are using Alfred, the “open in a new window” is managed by Alfred, which feels a bit smoother and cleaner. Hope it helps, and good luck.

Thanks!

It works well. It was the OPEN APP action I forgot.

Hi!

I created another variant.

It opens a small text box to fill the content of the quick note and add it directly in the new note without opening it:

I found this way quickier.

If you prefer open the note anyway, you can add the two last actions:

On iOS, i configure it on the three taps to the back of the phone: adding a quick note is really convenient and fast now…

That’s a great addition. I prefer to open the note directly, mainly because I want to format the content in the note as I’m writing, which I think won’t work when you open it In the shortcut input window. But fantastic if that solves it for you

Yes, everyone can choose what fits better to his/her workflow. That’s why I called it a variant

For my part, when I want to edit/format a note, it means I have a bit of time to add and polish the note. So I can open the Agenda app itself and put the note in the good project and set all details.

But sometimes, I just need to note really quickly something with no time to edition, formatting and organization. That’s why the really simple and fast input window fits better for me for these case.

Exactly, that’s why I think your solution is brilliant :slightly_smiling_face:
Did you end up creating a project for quick notes, or do you manage the categorising it when trigger the shortcut?

No, I kept your idea of the QuickNotes project. Configuring the project at the creation will add a new step. I don’t want this for a quick note, I want less friction as possible.

It means I have to move the quick note later in the good project. Or deleted it (which is often the case, because I use this shortcut a lot for temporary information).

Anyway, for another variant, I wondering if is it possible to list all projects in Agenda, put them in a variable and then in a list to choose the project where we would like to store the quicknote. I have to check that.

Here the version where a list of projects is shown. The quick note will be added in the project you choose.

In the FIND ALL PROJECT, you can set how the list is sorted / filtered / limited.

You can put the action ASK FOR in first if you want to type the text first and then choose the project after.

This is all very cool. Nice job!

I’m wondering if this points to a feature we could add in Agenda. We could add a new note widget, which would function like a button to open a particular project and immediately insert a note.

Is that something that could substitute for this shortcut, or would it the fact it opened up Agenda still be a pain?

Yes, a widget could be great. Maybe it could open a small window (not the full Agenda app).

On macOS, we can imagine an icon in the menu bar to create this Quicknote.
Or, an Hot corner (if Apple allows it…).
But the most efficient way will be having in addition a key shortcut.

It could be great to choose in which project these Quicknote go.

But the best will be these notes would be special, and tagged as “Quick Notes” and appear in a Overview dedicated to.
More or less like “On the Agenda” ones, but not yet attached to a project.

And, when we define a project for a Quick Note, it becomes a normal note (leaving Quick Notes Overview).

This will be really efficient to note something really quickly on the road.
