Inserted image has no title in the thumbnail view

What I did:

  • I have inserted images from the media library
  • Changed the view to thumbnail +title

What happened:

  • The thumbnails are displayed but without titles
  • I have changed the titles
  • The title is only displayed for one thumbnail, but not completely. No title is displayed for the other 2.

The titles are visible as inline:

What I expected:
I always want to see the title in the view.

I inserted the images on the iPad and changed the titles there too. It didn’t work after several attempts.

Then tried again on the iPhone and even restarted the device. Problem remains and is reproducible when inserting new images.

Edit: The same problem with older notes with images and other attachments.

Things that might be helpful to know (Agenda version, OS and model, etc):
iPadOS/iOS 17.6.1, Agenda 19.0

So this happens with attachments? If you add a file from the Files app, does it show the title?

Is there anything unusual about the title? Could it have strange hidden characters? Does retyping the title fix it?

So this happens with attachments?

Yes, but not always

If you add a file from the Files app, does it show the title?

The source doesn’t seem to matter.
Here are a few more examples on the iPad:

Is there anything unusual about the title? Could it have strange hidden characters?

Mine are short titles without special characters.

Does retyping the title fix it?

The text file is renamed in the Name field. No title visible afterwards either:

Crazy! This view works:

Some attachments with longer titles only show the first 1 or 2 words. It seems to be a limited number of characters and believe the agenda standard, so not a bug.

Edit:
Changed the title here to “15.08.2024”. Nothing is displayed:

Then changed to “Übersicht 15.08.2024”. And now "Übersicht“ is visible:

Does this have anything to do with the 17.6.1 update? Nothing else has changed…

So this was working fine for you before the update?

Agenda does truncate titles, which could explain some of the shortening.

A name like “JPEG” may cause issues, I guess, because it is also the file extension of a file type, ie a jpeg file. Perhaps that is confusing things.

BTW, have you seen this on other platforms like iPhone or Mac? I just tested on my Mac, and it seems to work OK there. I will try to test on an iPad later.

Drew

I’m sure it was still working in July. But I can’t say exactly when it stopped working.

Agenda does truncate titles, which could explain some of the shortening.

I know that.
Only the titles that are longer seem to be shown at the moment. Short titles with only 1 word are invisible. If I reduce long and visible (shortened) titles with several words to 1 word, the title is then invisible.

A name like “JPEG” may cause issues, I guess, because it is also the file extension of a file type, ie a jpeg file. Perhaps that is confusing things.

Title JPEG was only for testing. It doesn’t matter which title I enter.
But if there is this title restriction in Agenda, then that is another and further problem. Why am I not allowed to name a file e.g. JPEG.jpg?

BTW, have you seen this on other platforms like iPhone or Mac?

No, can only test this on the iPad and iPhone.

Here is another example with a picture from an older note.

And in that view, everything is ok:

It’s very odd. I just tested on my iPhone and Mac, and both worked fine with single words like JPEG and Image.

I wonder if it could be due to your language setting, or perhaps a setting like text size? It looks like you are using German, correct? Do you have the default text size?

Of course. That is what I was trying to say. If it works that way, it is a bug that needs fixing. We would certainly not deliberately make it work that way

We will try to figure out what is going on. Please let us know if you discover any more clues.

Kind regards,
Drew

Hi drew, maybe this test will help:

What is odd is that even the first one is not right. The 123 should wrap around, not get cut off.

Thanks for the extra info!

I actually changed the preferred language for Agenda several times on the iPhone 2-3 weeks ago. However, the text size has not changed.
I was a little surprised that I couldn’t find the preferred language setting for Agenda on the iPad at this point.

I think that should be the trigger of the problem…

We had a chat about this, and think there may be one other possibility: that the text is there, but invisible due to dark/light mode color issues.

To test this, if you see this problem again, can you try this:

  1. Leave the app
  2. Bring up the running apps list (usually by dragging up from the bottom of the screen)
  3. Find Agenda, and swipe it off the top of the screen to “kill” it.
  4. Launch Agenda. Is it now working or not? Do you see the text that you couldn’t see before on the attachment?

Unfortunately, your suggestion did not help.

I have already restarted the iPhone and iPad.
My interface appearance:
iPhonePro: black
iPadPro: system

I only see the title on both devices when the text has reached a certain length.

OK, thanks. That at least rules out that as the cause.

I did some testing in German, but couldn’t get the problem to arise. It’s very odd.

You don’t have any special keyboard extensions installed, right? Something which might need to interact with the text in other apps? Eg. TextExpander.

I installed the Rocket Typist app on July 3 and tested it for 2-3 weeks. Then removed it on the iPhone, but also forgot to do this on the iPad. I have now also removed this app from the iPad.
I also restarted the iPad, but the problem remained.
However, I have been using the system’s own text replacement for a long time (Settings-> Keyboards-> Text replacement).

I have to say that this display of attachments in my notes is not so relevant for me. There are also 2 other options that still work.
But it can be exciting if the bug remains after the update to the next version.

I hear you. We haven’t been able to reproduce the bug, which makes it very difficult to fix. If you do think of something that might be relevant, please let us know. Some text setting that people don’t typically use, an accessibility setting, or something like that.

Yes, that’s how we do it. I’ll let you know when I have something new.

One more question. Could reinstalling the Agenda app on a device solve the problem, or would that have no positive effect? I would do it then, but also don’t want to get other problems (e.g. iCloud sync) afterwards.

Thanks for your support!

Hi @drewmccormack,
I think I have found something.

If I change the font to Avenir Next (default) on the iPad in Agenda settings, the titles are visible again on both devices. This also applies to all default fonts except “Atkinson Hyperlegible”.

The font “Atkinson Hyperlegible” is the first problem.

I actually think it’s very good and activated it immediately after implementation, so it’s been a while.

However, there are also other problems with the “Thumbnail and title” display.

  1. changed the font on the iPad to Default in the Agenda settings
  2. the setting is synchronized after 3-5s on the iPhone. (My wish would be not to change this :face_with_monocle:)
  3. the font is then the same on both devices, but not for the titles of the thumbnails.
  4. only when I re-edit a title on the iPhone, the font is then only adjusted for that.
  5. changing the font on the iPhone corrects the font of all titles again

See an example here.

I can see this on the iPad immediately after changing the font:

…and this is what I see on the iPhone after I have edited the title above.
I previously changed the font on the iPhone several times for testing purposes.
The font of the titles in the middle and at the bottom hangs until the font is changed again on the iPhone.

View on iPhone after I change the font setting synchronized from iPad to another e.g. Charter. This change makes all titles appear correctly again.

The second problem is the synchronization of the Agenda font settings.

Ok. I now also understand why I could see the titles in some old notes. I still typed them in the default font.
What I don’t understand is why it feels like the new font (AtkH) has only been causing problems since July. I’ve been using it on the iPhone for a long time and I didn’t notice the problems before.

I hope my report is understandable and I can help you with it!

Regards,
Roman

Reinstalling Agenda on the Mac will typically not change anything. Reinstalling on iOS will remove your local data, and you will have to download everything from iCloud again, so I don’t recommend it.

It seems likely indeed that the font setting is related here. That is an odd font. I have a feeling it was added for a specialized group of customers, like people with dyslexia, but I’m not sure. Perhaps it has issues that could cause this, given it is not a standard font.

I did some testing on macOS. When I changed the font, it did change the font immediately in the thumbnails as well, which is the intention. So seemed to work for me. Are you saying it didn’t properly change for you? Was it when it synced the change over that it didn’t refresh properly?

Update: just tested, and indeed I see what you mean. When syncing the setting over, the thumbnails are not refreshing. This is a bug, and we will fix it in an upcoming release. Thanks for reporting it!

Has there been any progress on this issue?
The problem of using the Atkinson Hyperlegible font still seems to exist.

This is a long thread which took many twists.

In the end, we concluded that the font choice was the issue, correct? It’s a not standard font, not installed by default on device.

And the issue you have is purely on iPhone? Or do you see it on iPad and macOS?

I may get a chance to look at this. Perhaps the font is not installing properly. Worse case scenario is that it is installed OK, but that there is some problem in the font file causing the layout to fail.

Yes, such errors are not so easy to explain. It is sometimes very tedious.
I think the main problem is the synchronization of the font setting. I generally find it strange to synchronize this setting at all. For example, I would like to use a different font on the iPhone than on the iPad. Agenda does not allow this. Why?

I have rechecked the problem and it affects multiple fonts. It often depends on where I change the font, on the iPhone or iPad. I don’t use MacOS (yet).
These fonts generally cause problems on both devices and in all possible constellations:

  • Atkinson Hyperlegible
  • Courier
  • Helvetica
  • Palatino

I have not yet discovered any problems with the default and system font. For this reason, I now only use Avenir Next (default).
