Visual indicator that a Note is already open in another window?

I use multiple windows frequently, and often have several open.

I sometimes find myself opening a window (I invariably use cmd-O) only to discover it is already open.

It’s not a big deal, as that just brings the already-open-Note into focus, rather than opening a duplicate window, but it would be nice if there was a visual indication (in notes in the main window) when a note is already open.

It would be handy! What about the attached. Add a keyboard shortcut with a window number. Or make use of finders “cycle thru windows”. Or add a selection popup icon next to the + (new) in the left panel.

Nice! Though I was thinking of an indicator in the title area of the note itself.

I invariably use the finder command to cycle through windows, and what annoys me is cycling through the windows, coming to the main agenda window, seeing the note I’m try to get to in the main window, selecting it, using cmd-O, then realising it was open all the time.

If there was a visual indicator near the note title, in the main agenda window, I would know it was already open and keep cycling!

It’s not a big deal at all, just a bit annoying - partly annoyance at myself for forgetting the note is already open, and at the slight break in my workflow.

Makes sense to have an indicator I guess, but what is the use case? Both notes have the same content, and an edit in either will work for both, so is it useful to know there are multiple?

The use case is minor - simply the annoyance-with-self when opening an already open window. Just a niggle!

But what is that annoyance exactly? It doesn’t keep opening new windows, right? It just shows you the one you already opened. In effect, it gives you exactly what you want, right?

The annoyance is ridiculously minor:

Without the indicator I move through the windows using keyboard:

then I see the main window, showing the note I’m looking for

I click on that note and open with cmd-O

With the indicator I would go:

then I see the main window, showing the note I’m looking for is already open, so I keep going

`cmd

`cmd

until I get to the window / notes I’m seeking.

The avoided (very minor) annoyances are:

  1. shfiting from keyboard to mouse
  2. cognitive disruption of thinking “oh, drat, the window was already open”

I see. So the annoyance is that you could have just used the keyboard. Makes sense.
