When I use Agenda in landscape mode in my Ipad and I close the tabs on the sides the main area does not resize to use up the additional space. But if I run Agenda in portrait mode this works.
Is there a way to do this or is it a bug or just not supported?

I think what you are seeing is a deliberate feature. Full screen width text is difficult to read. Apple recommend a “readable width”, which is narrower on a wide scree. So indeed, there is a maximum width of text in landscape. Same on the Mac.
