Nested numbered lists

Everybody loves a list! However, the way that numbered lists are implemented here is not always the best or what people want. In particular, I often use nested lists, either bullets or numbered. I find that the way numbered lists work is not the optimum way that people would necessarily use them. What we get is the following:

  1. First main item
    1. subitem 1
    2. subitem 2
  2. Second main item
    1. subitem 1
    2. subitem 2
  3. etc etc etc

What I would like to see (or have the option of selecting):

  1. First main item
    a. subitem 1
    b. subitem 2
  2. Second main item
    a. subitem 1
    b. subitem 2
  3. etc etc etc

For me this seems a much more natural way of ordering numbered lists. Is this something that would be possible to implement in the next update? Please??!! :smile:

I find this feature quite important as pasting a nested list into Agenda from another source ends up in a mess at the moment. Please support this nested list style, and ideally also recognise that text copied is of this style and automatically apply it. Thank you!

The formulation of numbered lists in the hierarchical order that I choose is EXACTLY what I am looking for, and can’t find on day 1 of my purchase for iPad. The original note was almost 3 years ago-- had this feature yet been added? OR, alternatively, can sub-projects be moved MANUALLY? I need flexibility to move priority tasks around by CONCEPT ORDER, and not ONLY by date! Thank-you. App looks promising, but if I can’t create numbered check lists, I will be cancelling before the trial is over. :slightly_frowning_face:

No, we don’t have numbered checklists, sorry. You can nest numbered lists, and you can also start numbered lists at number other than 1, but we don’t have a combined list type. (I actually don’t know an app that has it, but I don’t know them all.)

No, you can’t auto sort.

Is this in the pipeline for a future enhancement? I find the current format quite weird and unintuitive. In order to maintain backwards compatibilty, maybe it could be a new format (perhaps “outline” would be a good name)?

So you want nested lists to get some alternative numbering (eg roman numerals)?

I can take it along for a future update.

Not necessarily roman numerals. Just something like:

  1. a.
    b.
    1.
    a.

Preferably this could be configured in some way so that people can have options if they wanted roman numerals or whatever system works for them.

What I’ve done is add support for numbered lists with roman and letter labels. For now it is only available via the \numbered action. There is now a ‘style’ parameter that can be set to number/roman/letter.

We’ll see how it goes and whether there is demand to make this easier to use.

It will be in the next beta, and in the public release late January.

In case you missed it, this is out now. You can now use the \numbered action to choose the number style.
