I actually use the recent project feature with the clock at the bottom, which mostly overlaps what I am actively working on.

You can long press that clock to get different options.

I don’t remember exactly, but I tested those filters at the clock at the bottom once and then forgot they even existed.
At some point, I created my own smart views, “Edited Today” and “Last 2 Days,” which work for me.
The “Edited Today” filter at the clock at the bottom unfortunately returns incorrect results. Right now, the “Edited Today” filter shows me 4 projects, but I’ve only edited one note from a project today. As expected, there should only be one project on the left side of the list.

Note that if you click and hold the clock-icon you can have more control over what “recent” means when pressing it:
