What I did: Created a link to an email (AOL mail note opened in Apple Mail) by dragging the email into an Agenda note on iMac. Link works as expected when clicked on iMac. Next went to Agenda IOS version to open and when click link only opens Apple Mail, dosent take you to the specific email linked?
What happened: The IOS Agenda version only opens the Mail App not the specific email linked.
What I expected: The email link would open the specific email linked from either IOS or MacOS Agenda app.
Thanks for any help.
Jeff
Hi Jeff,
I’m afraid each email program on each device may have a different “index” of the emails. They may have different ids.
In any case, I don’t think this an be a problem in Agenda. Agenda is recording message id properly it seems, but either the id is different on iOS, or the iOS mail app is not properly navigating when it is told to open the message.
Kind regards,
Drew
Hi Drew,
I tried an experiment. This time in MacOS I dragged an email into both Apple Reminders and Apple Notes to create a link. When I clicked the link in each app using MacOS each link opened the specific note correctly as expected.
Next I went to my iPad, using the same links created in MacOS. They both opened the specific note as one would expect.
This leads me to believe it isn’t an Apple issue in how the Apple Mail app handles as a link opens using either MacOS or IOS in my test in both Apple Notes and Apple Reminders.
What are your thoughts?
Thank you, Jeff
OK, I just tried this myself, and it worked fine in my case. I created a link by dragging a single email into Agenda on the Mac, and I was able to click it on iOS (iPhone), and it opened directly into the email (not the email list).
So I’m wondering what is going on. Some things to consider:
- You are linking an individual email, not a thread, correct?
- I assume the specific email is there in the iOS app, right?
- Is there anything unusual about the account the email is in?
- Have you tried with other types of emails, perhaps other accounts?
- Did you try killing Mail and relaunching it?
Opening URLs/links is not something an app has a lot of control over. Agenda simply says to the system, open this URL. The URL is passed to Mail app, and it decides what to do with it. So the problem is more likely to be in Mail app TBH.
I’m not sure what it could be though. Perhaps worth looking at settings, restarting the phone etc. Check the iOS version (perhaps a beta may not work).
I’m just clutching at straws here, because it seems to work OK for me.
Kind regards,
Drew
Drew, thanks for your follow-up!! Amazingly the links began working?? Verified on all my devices using links to emails in Agenda using all possible combinations of cell, on WIFI, WIFI off. It worked perfectly every time. It must be a gremlin that only affects me when I go out of town and need to access my links!
Happy Holidays
Jeff
In my experience the problem is usually syncing - it can take a bit for the specific email to show up AND be indexed before the link will work.
