What I did:
\date should enter todays date. On macOS on my machine it just outputs a series of numbers. Almost like an epoch number, but it doesn’t seem long enough. This has never worked properly for me on macOS. Works fine on my iPad.
Try typing \date(default) that should restore the format to the default.
