What I did: Created a Agenda Drawing, started writing / drawing with my Apple Pencil 2 and then doubletapped the pencil to switch from pen to eraser
What happened: Nothing
What I expected: The tool switching to eraser
Things that might be helpful to know (Agenda version, OS and model, etc):
Agenda Version 23.3 (issue happened in 23.2 as well)
iPad Air 5 with M1
iPadOS 27.0 Public Beta
Gesture is working in other apps (Apple Notes, Goodnotes, Freeform) so it doesn’t seem to be a general OS-Bug
Thanks for reporting it, and for checking it against the other apps first.
We use Apple’s own drawing canvas for Agenda drawings, so the double tap should be handled for us. The fact that it works in Notes and Freeform and not in Agenda means we are missing something on our side rather than the gesture being unavailable.
A couple of questions to help me narrow this down.
When the double tap did nothing, was the tool palette on screen? That is the floating panel with the pen, marker and eraser in it. Inside a drawing the double tap is handled by that palette rather than by us, so if it is not showing, the gesture has nothing to act on.
Related to that, does it happen on the very first drawing you open after launching Agenda, or only once you have opened and closed a drawing earlier in the same session?
Last one. Had the double tap ever worked in an Agenda drawing on an earlier iPadOS, or is 27 the first version you have tried it on?
I can confirm on iPadOS 27 Beta I see the same behaviour, and undo/redo does not work either. Today should be the release of 27 so I will try it again after installation.
So it works everywhere else, it worked in Agenda before, the palette is on screen, and it happens on every drawing regardless of what you opened first. That rules out most of what I was wondering about. And undo and redo failing as well is useful, because those come from the same place, which suggests one thing is going wrong rather than the individual gestures.
Good to know the public release of 27 did not change it. I will dig into it from here.
Just to let you know, 23.3.2 is out on the App Store now, and it should sort this out. The canvas was not telling the system that the pencil was in use, which is why the double tap and the undo and redo gestures all had nothing to act on.
Let me know if it is working for you now. Thanks again for the testing, it made this a lot easier to find.
You were both right to push back. The 23.3.2 change restored undo and redo, and I said at the time it should sort out the double tap as well. It did not, and your reports are what made me go back and measure it properly.
The tap was reaching the note’s text view, and that was swallowing it, so PencilKit never saw it at all. The app now passes the tap to the drawing canvas and carries out your preferred action itself. I have tested it on an iPad Pro with a real Pencil: eraser and back inside a drawing, and a double tap in a note starts a new drawing.
It is not in a build yet, so it will come in an upcoming release rather than something you can try today. Thanks for the testing, it made this a lot easier to find.
