Right now smart queries are powerful but can only be pinned to the overviews section. is there a way to allow these filters to instead exist inside categories? I would find it valuable to have these smart filters to show up within my project as another way of prioritizing tasks within a specifc domain.

Ditto! Searches and overviews are a lot more powerful than in 2022. As a result, there has been a significant increase in their use as well as discussion regarding where and how to save them. I get the reason for not storing data in categories but what about as a designated space within the project list. An “overview” if you will, selectable from within the existing project list for each category.
I think it makes sense to be able to move the smart overviews — which are basically the same as smart folders — into categories. We just haven’t got around to implementing it yet.
